Statistics of Visitors to Japan from Overseas

  • According to the JNTO, the number of international visitors to Japan in May 2013 was 875,000 (31.2% increase from May 2012). This was the third hightest number on a monthly basis and exceeded the number of foreigners who came in April 2013 and July 2010.
  • Increase of the air-seat capacity and “Visit Japan” promotion are thought to be a major reason for this increase. Looking by the destination, major destinations in Asia such as Hong Kong (+82.2%), Taiwan (+61.7%) and Thailand (+67.8%) except China (-27.2%) increased greatly. Oceania, Europe and US also showed a double digit increase.

Statistics of Japanese Tourists Travelling Abroad

  • Japan National Tourist Organization announced that the estimated number of Japanese overseas travelers in April 2013 was 1,237,000, a 12.3% decrease over April 2012, and 1,262,000 in May 2013 (-11.8%). The outbound figure decreased over the same month of the previous year for the four straight months.
  • The Golden Week Holiday was divided in two holidays by three-day weekdays and it was not easy to take a long holiday for Japanese travelers. Also, the weakening Yen value curtailed the number of overseas. Aothough the number of visitors to South East Asia such as Thailand (+12.7%) and Vietnam (+13.4%) have increased, East Asia destinations have been showing a prolonged decrease.

The number of Japanese outbound tourists by port of departure

Narita International Airport reported that the number of Japanese departures in April 2013 was 576,139, down 7.2% from April 2012. Japanese departures from Haneda Airport decreased to 193,288 (-11.3%). Japanese international departures from Kansai International Airport was 230470 (-15.1%). Central Japan International Airport showed a 13.7% decrease to 115,877. International departures from the two Tokyo metropolitan airports totaled to 769,427.

Gross Sales of Major Companies

Gross sales in outbound travel of the major travel companies were approximately 154.3 billion yen in April 2013, a decrease of 9.5% from April 2012. Gross sales of outbound package tours in April 2013 were 48.5 billion JPY, a decrease of 12.5% from a year ago. Also, the total number of tourists on package tours decreased by 17.6%.

Monthly Economic Report

In May, the Japanese government announced that the The Japanese economy is picking up steadily. Concerning short-term prospects, the recovery is expected to resume as the improvement of the corporate profits leads to increases in household income and business investment, while exports pick up and the effects of the policies develop. However, slowing down of overseas economies is still downside risk of the Japanese economy. The consumer price index for May 2013 increased 0.1 point to 99.8 from the previous month.
