1-2. Number of Japanese Overseas Travelers in December 2007


Japan National Tourist Organization announced that the total number of Japanese overseas travelers in December 2007 was 1,372,000, a 0.8% decrease over December 2006. In total for January till December numbers fell by 1.3% from the previous year. Among major destinations, China and Macao experienced increases of over 5% while arrivals to Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore remained unchanged.


For arrivals of Japanese travelers in December 2007, Macau showed a large increase of 50% from the same period in the previous year and Singapore experienced an increase of 10%. In other Asia destinations, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Vietnam experienced an increase but only approximately 1%. On the other hand, Korea (-9.5%) had a decline from the same period in the previous year. Destinations other than in Asia, Hawaii (-3.8%) has continued into a fourth month of consecutive decline, Guam (-0.2%) also showed a fall into its second consecutive month and for Oceania, arrivals to Australia decreased by 8.3% and for New Zealand 13.7%.


Narita International Airport reported that the number of Japanese departures in December 2007 was 738,310 down by 2.3% from the same month of the year before. Kansai International Airport recorded 296,450, (-2.4%), and Central Japan International Airport 154,500, (+1.3%).

1-3. Number of Inbound Travelers in December 2007


According to the JNTO, for December 2007 the number of inbound travelers increased by 15.7% from the same period in the previous year, reaching 785,000.The preliminary figures for the annual total of inbound travelers for 2007 is 835,000 an increase of 13.7% which is approximately a rise of 1 million of inbound travelers from 2006.


For December 2007, Japan experienced an increase of more than 10% of inbound travelers from many destinations. In Asia, the growth rate for Hong Kong (+31.4%), Singapore (+36.1%) and Thailand (+24.1%) was highest.

1-4. Gross Sales of Major Companies (Outbound Travel Products)


Gross sales in outbound travel of the top 50 travel companies were approximately 225 billion JPY in November 2007. It has increased by 1.6% from the same month of the previous year. Gross sales of outbound package tours were 59.7 billion JPY in November 2007, decreased by 0.6% from November 2006, while total number of tourists on package tours decreased by 5.2%. Per person sales in November 2007 were up by some 7,000 yen from the same months of 2006 respectively, largely due to recent depreciation of Japanese yen against major foreign currencies and increase in costs for land operators.
