1-2. Number of Japanese Overseas Travelers in December 2007


Japan National Tourist Organization announced that the total number of Japanese overseas travelers in January 2008 was b>1,363,000, a 3.2% decrease over January 2007.

For January arrivals of Japanese travelers, Macau experienced an increase of close to 40% from the previous year, Singapore (+5.9%) showed a 5th consecutive month of increase, whilst all other destinations saw a decline. Among major destinations in Asia, Taiwan (-2.8%), Hong Kong (-0.7%) experienced a decline from the same month in the previous year. For destinations other than Asia, Hawaii (-5.2%) continued into a 5th consecutive month of decline, Guam (-2.2%) a 3rd consecutive decrease, and in Oceania Australia showed a fall of 22.9% and New Zealand 17.3%.

Narita International Airport reported that the number of Japanese departures in January 2008 was 741,448 down by 5.5% from the same month of the year before. Kansai International Airport recorded 289,130, (-5.2%), and Central Japan International Airport 154,600, (-2.5%).

1-3. Number of Inbound Travelers in January 2007


According to the JNTO, for January 2008 the number of inbound travelers increased by 15.2% from the same period in the previous year, reaching 712,000.
For January 2008, Japan experienced an increase from all major destinations except for the U.S mainland and Great Britain. In Asia, the growth rate for Hong Kong (+49.8%), China (+33.5%), Singapore (+30.2%) and Taiwan (+21.3%) was highest. In addition for Australia, as for the ski season, Japan experienced an increase of 27.8%.

1-4. Gross Sales of Major Companies (Outbound Travel Products)


Gross sales in outbound travel of the top 50 travel companies were approximately 183 billion JPY in January 2008. It has increased by 1.3% from the same month of the previous year. Gross sales of outbound package tours were 58.2 billion JPY in January 2008, decreased by 1.1% from January 2007, while total number of tourists on package tours decreased by 3.8%. Per person sales were up by some 4,000 yen, largely because the ground cost was calculated based on the previous 'week' Japanese yen against major foreign currencies.
