1-1.Japanese Economic Trend (released in April 2008)



1-2. Number of Japanese Overseas Travelers in February 2008

Japan National Tourist Organization announced that the total number of Japanese overseas travelers in February 2008 was 1,368,000, a 0.7% decrease over February 2007.

For February arrivals of Japanese travelers, Macau experienced an increase of close to 35% from the previous year. Taiwan rebounded from fall in January to increase by 9%. Singapore (+1.0%) and Hong Kong (+0.5%) showed slight increase. All other major destinations showed a decline; China (-2.3%), Korea (-4.9%), Hawaii (-3.2%), Guam (-3.2%), Australia (-16.0%) and New Zealand (-13.4%).

Narita International Airport reported that the number of Japanese departures in February 2008 was 753,181 down by 0.9% from the same month of the year before. Kansai International Airport recorded 294,370, (-2.1%), and Central Japan International Airport 158,000, (+1.9%).

The figures of Japanese arrival to major destinations in 2007 have been finalized. Major Asian destinations saw rise in Japanese arrival last year except for Korea and Thailand. Macau recorded a remarkable 36% increase in 2007 following 30% growth in previous year. The growth of Japanese arrival to China and Vietnam slowed down from double digit increase in 2006. Hawaii and Guam had two year consecutive decline, while Canada and Australia suffered from double digit decrease of incoming Japanese tourists. New Zealand and Northern Mariana are struggling with continuous decline of Japanese tourist arrival since 2005 and 2006, respectively, due to the reduced air seat supply.

1-3. Number of Inbound Travelers in February 2008
 According to the JNTO, for February 2008, the number of inbound travelers increased by 10.3% from the same period in the previous year, reaching 696,600.
For February 2008, Japan experienced an increase from all major destinations except for Taiwan, the growth rate for Hong Kong (+35.3%), Thailand (+30.9%), Singapore (+32.8%) was highest. In addition, for Australia, as for the ski season, Japan experienced an increase of 31.1%.

1-4. Gross Sales of Major Companies (Outbound Travel Products)
Gross sales in outbound travel of the top 50 travel companies were approximately 199 billion JPY in February 2008. It has increased by 5.0% from the same month of the previous year. Gross sales of outbound package tours were 56.5 billion JPY in February 2008, increased by 4.1% from February 2007, while total number of tourists on package tours increased by 1.2%. Per person sales were up by some 4,000 yen, largely because the ground cost was calculated based on the previous 'week' Japanese yen against major foreign currencies.
