1-1.Japanese Economic Trend (released in May 2008)

1-2. Number of Japanese Overseas Travelers in March 2008

Japan National Tourist Organization announced that the total number of Japanese overseas travelers in March 2008 was 1,455,000, a 7.6% decrease over March 2007.
For March arrivals of Japanese travelers, Macau experienced an increase more than 20% from the previous year. All other major destinations showed a decline; Taiwan (-11.5%), Hong Kong (-9.2%), Singapore (-2.7%), China (-13.8%), Korea (-0.1%), Hawaii (-11.9%), Guam (-5.2%), Australia (-15.9%) and New Zealand (-9.5%).
Narita International Airport reported that the number of Japanese departures in March 2008 was 788,007 down by 8.1% from the same month of the year before. Kansai International Airport recorded 309,800, (-9.1%), and Central Japan International Airport 171,000, (-7.8%).

1-3. Number of Inbound Travelers in March 2008

TAccording to the JNTO, for March 2008, the number of inbound travelers increased by 6.9% from the same period in the previous year, reaching 731,900. For March 2008, Japan experienced an increase from all major destinations except for Taiwan and Korea, the growth rate for Hong Kong (+59.1%), Thailand (+30.5%), Singapore (+35.0%) was highest. In addition, for Australia, as for the ski season, Japan experienced an increase of 33.1%

1-4. Gross Sales of Major Companies (Outbound Travel Products)

Gross sales in outbound travel of the top 50 travel companies were approximately 223 billion JPY in March 2008. It has decreased by 3.7% from the same month of the previous year. Gross sales of outbound package tours were 65.4 billion JPY in March 2008, decreased by 3.4% from March 2007, while total number of tourists on package tours decreased by 7.6%. Per person sales were up by some 7,000 yen, largely because the ground cost was calculated based on the previous 'week' Japanese yen against major foreign currencies.
