1-1.Japanese Economic Trend (released in May 2008)

1-2. Number of Japanese Overseas Travelers in April 2008

Japan National Tourist Organization announced that the total number of Japanese overseas travelers in April 2008 was 1,187,000, an 8.0% decrease over April 2007.
For April arrivals of Japanese travelers, Macau (+27.0%), Korea (+4.0%), Hong Kong (+0.6%), and North Mariana (+9.0%) experienced an increase from the same month of previous year, while major Asian destinations showed a decline; China (-10.5%), Taiwan (-7.7%). A continuous decrease was seen in the Japanese arrival to Hawaii (-15.3%), Guam (-8.8%), Australia (-21.4%) and New Zealand (-11.6%).
Narita International Airport reported that the number of Japanese departures in April 2008 was 648,027 down by 9.0% from the same month of the year before. Kansai International Airport recorded 247,940, (-10.2%), and Central Japan International Airport 138,000, (-9.0%).

1-3. Number of Inbound Travelers in April 2008

According to the JNTO, the number of inbound travelers for April 2008 reached 780,200 a 9.3% increase from the same period in the previous year. For April 2008, Japan experienced an increase of visitors from all major destinations except for Hong Kong, U.S.A., Canada and U.K. China (+29.4%), Thailand (+30.8%), Singapore (+16.9%), Taiwan (+12.9%) were among source markets with high growth.

1-4. Gross Sales of Major Companies (Outbound Travel Products)

Gross sales in outbound travel of the top 50 travel companies were approximately 182 billion JPY in April 2008. It has decreased by 8.3% from the same month of the previous year. Gross sales of outbound package tours were 51.0 billion JPY in April 2008, decreased by 15.1% from April 2007, while total number of tourists on package tours decreased by 10.2%. Per person sales were down by some 10,000 yen, presumably because 'Golden Week' travelers to long-haul destinations decreased from the previous year due to this year's holiday arrangement unfavorable for overseas travelers.
