1-1.Japanese Economic Trend (released in July 2008)

1-2. Number of Japanese Overseas Travelers in May 2008

Japan National Tourist Organization announced that the total number of Japanese overseas travelers in May 2008 was 1,291,000, a 1.1% decrease over May 2007.
For May arrivals of Japanese travelers, Macau (+27.8%), Korea (+8.2%), Hong Kong (+1.8%), Singapore (+8.6%), Guam (+5.4%) and North Mariana (+9.0%) experienced an increase from the same month of previous year, while major Asian destinations showed a decline; China (-17.1%). A continuous decrease was seen in the Japanese arrival to Hawaii (-6.3%), Australia (-9.8%) and New Zealand (-4.6%).
Narita International Airport reported that the number of Japanese departures in May 2008 was 692,935 down 2.2% from the same month of the year before. Kansai International Airport recorded 265,610, (-6.1%), and Central Japan International Airport 142,500, (-6.6%).

1-3. Number of Inbound Travelers in May 2008

According to the JNTO, the number of inbound travelers for May 2008 reached 736,300 a 10.8% increase from the same period in the previous year. For May 2008, Japan experienced an increase of visitors from all major destinations except for U.S.A. and U.K. Thailand (+52.7%), Hong Kong (+42.2%), Singapore (+28.3%) were among source markets with high growth.

1-4. Gross Sales of Major Companies (Outbound Travel Products)

Gross sales in outbound travel of the top 50 travel companies were approximately 209 billion JPY in May 2008. It has increased by 1.3% from the same month of the previous year. Gross sales of outbound package tours were 60.0 billion JPY in May 2008, decreased by 1.9% from May 2007, while total number of tourists on package tours decreased by 4.2%. Per person sales were down by some 4,000 yen from the previous year.
