1-1.Japanese Economic Trend (released in August 2008)

1-2. Number of Japanese Overseas Travelers in June 2008

Japan National Tourist Organization announced that the total number of Japanese overseas travelers in June 2008 was 1,283,000, a 7.2% decrease over June 2007.
For June, arrivals of Japanese travelers to Macau (+26.3%), Korea (+4.4%), Vietnam (+3.9%) and North Mariana (+3.0%) experienced an increase from the same month of the previous year. The number of Japanese arrivals to China marked a 5-month consecutive drop (-19.6%). A continuous decrease was also seen in the Japanese arrival to Hawaii (-10.0%), Australia (-25.7%) and New Zealand (-4.4%).
Narita International Airport reported that the number of Japanese departures in June 2008 was 697,744 down 8.2% from the same month of the year before. Kansai International Airport recorded 263,810, (-10.9%), and Central Japan International Airport 143,400, (-12.4%).

1-3. Number of Inbound Travelers in June 2008

According to the JNTO, the number of inbound travelers for June 2008 reached 681,900 a 7.9% increase from the same period in the previous year. For June 2008, Japan experienced an increase of visitors from all major destinations except China and U.S.A. Especially Hong Kong (+51.2%), Singapore (+19.9%) among Asian countries, Germany (+14.4%) and France (+10.7%) among European countries showed a significant growth.

1-4. Gross Sales of Major Companies (Outbound Travel Products)

Gross sales in outbound travel of the top 50 travel companies were approximately 219 billion JPY in June 2008. It has decreased by 3.0% from the same month of the previous year. Gross sales of outbound package tours were 56.5 billion JPY in June 2008, decreased by 5.3% from the year ago, while total number of tourists on package tours decreased by 11.6%. Average tour participation cost per capita (per person sales) increased approximately 12,000 yen from the same month of the previous year.
