1-1.Japanese Economic Trend (released in September 2008)

1-2. Number of Japanese Overseas Travelers in July 2008

Japan National Tourist Organization announced that the total number of Japanese overseas travelers in July 2008 was 1,351,000, a 4.4% decrease over July 2007.
For July, arrivals of Japanese travelers to Korea (+8.3%), Macau (+17.8%) and Hong Kong (+3.5%) experienced an increase from the same month of the previous year. A continuous decrease was also seen in the Japanese arrival to Hawaii (-13.5%), Australia (-19.1%) and Canada (-10.1%).
Narita International Airport reported that the number of Japanese departures in July 2008 was 744,362 down 7.1% from the same month of the year before. Kansai International Airport recorded 279,760, (-7.6%), and Central Japan International Airport 144,700, (-7.5%).

1-3. Number of Inbound Travelers in July 2008

According to the JNTO, the number of inbound travelers for July 2008 reached 825,400 a 2.2% increase from the same period in the previous year. For July 2008, Japan experienced an increase of visitors from all major destinations except China, Korea, UK, Germany and U.S.A. Especially Hong Kong (+25.5%), Taiwan (+10.2%), France (+13.3%) and Australia (+16.0%) showed a significant growth.

1-4. Gross Sales of Major Companies (Outbound Travel Products)

Gross sales in outbound travel of the top 50 travel companies were approximately 225 billion JPY in July 2008. It has decreased by 3.0% from the same month of the previous year. Gross sales of outbound package tours were 65.4 billion JPY in July 2008, decreased by 6.7% from the year ago, while total number of tourists on package tours decreased by 10.5%. Average tour participation cost per capita (per person sales) increased approximately 8,000 yen from the same month of the previous year.
