1-1.Japanese Economic Trend (released in September 2008)

1-2. Number of Japanese Overseas Travelers in August 2008

Japan National Tourist Organization announced that the total number of Japanese overseas travelers in August 2008 was 1,486,016, a 11.9% decrease over August 2007.
For August, Japanese visitor arrival showed an increase solely with Macau (+14.6%) from the same month of the previous year. A continuous decrease was also seen in the Japanese arrival to Hawaii (-13.9%), Guam (-17.8%) and China (-20.9%).

Narita International Airport reported that the number of Japanese departures in August 2008 was 836,505 down 11.1% from the same month of the year before. Kansai International Airport recorded 304,740, (-16.2%), and Central Japan International Airport 160,646, (-15.9%).

1-3. Number of Inbound Travelers in August 2008

According to the JNTO, the number of inbound travelers for July 2008 reached 742,100 a 2.0% decrease from the same period in the previous year. For August 2008, Japan experienced an increase of visitors from Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Germany, France, and Australia. While Korea, Thailand, and U.S.A. showed a significant decrease largely due to the depreciation of their currency against JPY.

1-4. Gross Sales of Major Companies (Outbound Travel Products)

Gross sales in outbound travel of the top 50 travel companies were approximately 269 billion JPY in August 2008. It has decreased by 8.7% from the same month of the previous year. Gross sales of outbound package tours were 94.8 billion JPY in August 2008, decreased by 11.7% from the year ago, while total number of tourists on package tours decreased by 20.8%. Average tour participation cost per capita (per person sales) increased approximately 20,000 yen from the same month of the previous year.
