1-1.Japanese Economic Trend (released in September 2008)

1-2. Number of Japanese Overseas Travelers in September 2008

Japan National Tourist Organization announced that the total number of Japanese overseas travelers in September 2008 was 1,400,000, a 9.7% decrease over September 2007.
For September, Japanese visitor arrival showed an increase from the same month of the previous year in Macau (+22.7%), Viet Nam (+14.4%), Korea (+4.7%), Hong Kong (+3.2%), and North Mariana (+34.7%). A continuous decrease was also seen in the Japanese arrival to Hawaii (-19.8%), Guam (-12.3%) and China (-16.7%).


Narita International Airport reported that the number of Japanese departures in September 2008 was 781,036 down 12.3% from the same month of the year before. Kansai International Airport recorded 271,920, (-15.6%), and Central Japan International Airport 142,700, (-15.4%).

1-3. Number of Inbound Travelers in September 2008

According to the JNTO, the number of inbound travelers for September 2008 reached 641,500 a 6.9% decrease from the same period in the previous year. For September 2008, Japan experienced an increase of visitors from Hong Kong, Singapore, China, France, and Australia. While Korea, Taiwan, U.K. and U.S.A. showed a significant decrease largely due to the depreciation of their currency against JPY.

1-4. Gross Sales of Major Companies (Outbound Travel Products)

Gross sales in outbound travel of the top 50 travel companies were approximately 242 billion JPY in September 2008. It has decreased by 8.4% from the same month of the previous year. Gross sales of outbound package tours were 69.6 billion JPY in September 2008, decreased by 13.6% from the year ago, while total number of tourists on package tours decreased by 14.2%.
