1-2. Number of Japanese Overseas Travelers in January 2009

Japan National Tourist Organization announced that the total number of Japanese overseas travelers in January 2009 was 1,179,000, a 12.9% decrease over January 2008. The total annual Japanese international departure in 2008 was 15,987,250, a 7.6% drop from 2007.
For January, an increase in Japanese visitor arrival is seen with Korea (+55.3%), accelerated by depreciation of Korean Won against Japanese Yen, North Mariana (+11.1%), and Taiwan (+1.0%). A continuous decrease was also seen in the Japanese arrival to Hawaii (-12.7%), Australia (-33.5%), New Zealand (-25.6%), China (-29.2%) and Singapore (27.6%).

Narita International Airport reported that the number of Japanese departures in January 2009 was 627,628 down 16.0% from the same month of the year before. Kansai International Airport recorded 248,640, (-14.0%), and Central Japan International Airport 123,900, (-19.9%).

1-3. Number of Inbound Travelers in January 2009

According to the JNTO, the number of international visitors for January 2009 dropped to 580,800, an 18.4% decrease from the same period in the previous year, largely due to financial crises and the depreciation of major foreign currencies against JPY. For January 2009, Japan experienced an increase of visitors from China (+31.4%), Hong Kong (+34.1%) as the Chinese New Year, one of the big traveling seasons fell upon in January this year. Thailand saw an 8.5% increase, while Korea (-52.3%) and Taiwan (-9.0%) showed a significant decrease. The recent depreciation of KRW against JPY obviously discouraged Korean travelers to visit Japan.

1-4. Gross Sales of Major Companies (Outbound Travel Products)

Gross sales in outbound travel of the top 50 travel companies were approximately 143 billion JPY in January 2009. It has decreased by 20.6% from the same month of the previous year. Gross sales of outbound package tours were 46.5 billion JPY in January 2009, decreased by 19.0% from the year ago, while total number of tourists on package tours decreased by 9.0%.
