Monthly JTM Report : Feb 2010
Japan National Tourist Organization announced that the estimated number of Japanese overseas travelers in November 2009 was 1,277,000 a 1.0% increase over November 2008, and that of December was 1,284,000, 0.7% increase, respectively. The travel market in Japan slowed after the outbreak of the world economy crisis in the autumn of 2008 and the spread of H1N1 influenza. The monthly departure figures remained below the level of previous year until August 2009. After August saw an increase in Japanese international departure thanks to the rise of Japanese yen and the effect of 'Silver Week' in September. However, it is difficult to say that the Japanese travel market has come to a complete recovery from the slow market trends.
For November, Korea continued to experience a large increase in Japanese visitor arrival (+10.9%) as a result of depreciation of Korean Won against Japanese Yen. Japanese tourist arrival also increased in Thailand (+14.9%), China (+5.9%), Hawaii (+7.9%), and Canada (+11.0%). A continuous decrease was seen in the Japanese arrival to North Mariana (-39.8%).
Narita International Airport reported that the number of Japanese departures in November 2009 was 676,322 up 1.4% from the same month of the year before. Kansai International Airport recorded 262,450, (+1.5%), and Central Japan International Airport 125,793, (-10.2%).
