Monthly JTM Report : Mar 2010
Japan National Tourist Organization announced that the estimated number of Japanese overseas travelers in December 2009 was 1,284,000 a 0.7% increase over December 2008, and that in January 2010 was 1,277,000, an 8.9% increase, respectively. Looking back at the Japanese travel market in 2009, a decline due to the world economy crisis and the spread of H1N1 influenza continued until August. In September saw an increase in the Japanese international departure thanks to the rise of Japanese yen and the effect of 'Silver Week'. However, it is still difficult to say that the Japanese travel market has come to a complete recovery from the slow market trends.
In December, Japanese tourist arrival also increased in China (+8.4%), Taiwan (+0.2%) and Guam (+5.1%). A considerable decrease was seen in the Japanese arrival to Singapore (-15.1%) and North Mariana (-23.8%) due to the decrease of flights and downsizing of aircrafts.
Narita International Airport reported that the number of Japanese departures in December 2009 was 667,655 up 0.2% from the same month of the year before. Kansai International Airport recorded 271,850, (+1.0%), and Central Japan International Airport 125,773, (-7.2%).
