1-2. Number of Japanese Overseas Travelers in January 2010

Japan National Tourist Organization announced that the estimated number of Japanese overseas travelers in January was 1,264,000 a 7.8% increase over January 2009, and that in February 2010 was 1,290,000, a 5.1% decrease, respectively.
In January, Japanese tourist arrival increased in China (+29.4%), Taiwan (+23.0%), and Hong Kong (+22.0%). Japanese arrival to Korea (-12.0%) continued to decline as exchange rate of Won against Yen has rebounded. North Mariana suffered a 19.2% loss of Japanese visitors due to the decrease of flights and downsizing of aircrafts.

Narita International Airport reported that the number of Japanese departures in January 2010 was 675,566 up 7.6% from the same month of the year before. Kansai International Airport recorded 269,480, (+8.4%), and Central Japan International Airport 133,120, (+7.4%).

1-3. Number of Inbound Travelers in January 2010

According to the JNTO, the number of international visitors to Japan for January 2010 was 640,500, a 10.3% rise from the same period of the previous year. In January, Japan experienced a large increase of tourist arrival from Korea (+78.8%) after Korean Won has rebounded against Japanese Yen. Thai tourist arrival also rose (+13.5%) thanks to the increase in air-seat supply between Thailand and Japan. From China, visitor arrival to Japan was down 16.4% from January 2008, Hong Kong, 34.5%, and Singapore 27.1% as the Chinese New Year, one of the big traveling seasons fell upon in February this year.

1-4. Gross Sales of Major Companies (Outbound Travel Products)


Gross sales in outbound travel of the top 50 travel companies were approximately 131 billion JPY in January 2010. It has decreased by 8.3% from the same month of the previous year. Gross sales of outbound package tours in January 2010 were 43.4 billion JPY, decreased by 9.7% from the year ago, while total number of tourists on package tours decreased by 1.6%.
