1-2. Number of Japanese Overseas Travelers in April 2010

Japan National Tourist Organization announced that the estimated number of Japanese overseas travelers in April was 1,213,000 a 0.9% increase over April 2009, and that in May 2010 was 1,285,000, a 24.0% increase, respectively. The May 2010 figure was 1.3% larger than that of May 2008, indicating that the outbound travel market has fully rebounded from the major decline in May 2009 due to the spread of H1N1 flu. In April, among major destinations; China +22.3%, Hong Kong +17.2%, Macau +25.0%, Singapore +11.1% saw a growth of Japanese arrivals over the same month of previous year, while Japanese arrival to Korea decreased for the last five consecutive months. Beach resort destinations also saw a decline of Japanese visitors; North Mariana -26.4%, Hawaii -1.4%, Guam -1.2%.
Narita International Airport reported that the number of Japanese departures in April 2010 was 633,540 down 0.9% from the same month of the year before. Kansai International Airport recorded 244,640, (-0.3%), and Central Japan International Airport 124,027, (-4.3%).   While the three major international airports experienced a decline of Japanese departure, Tokyo-Haneda International Airport saw an increase by 27.5% over the April 2009 figure. Double daily Haneda-Beijing flights that have come into service in October 2009, coupled with the recovery of Japanese traffic to China, have largely contributed to the increase.

1-3. Number of Inbound Travelers in Aprl 2010

According to the JNTO, the number of international visitors to Japan for April 2010 was 787,900, a 25.8% rise from the same period of the previous year. In April, Japan experienced a large increase of tourist arrival from major Asian source markets; Korea (+66.9%), China (+41.3%), Taiwan (+20.2%), and Thailand (+26.7%). The figures are, however, still lower than those of the same month in 2008; Korea, -7.2%, and Taiwan -22.1%.

1-4. Gross Sales of Major Companies (Outbound Travel Products)


Gross sales in outbound travel of the top 50 travel companies were approximately 153 billion JPY in April 2010. It has increased by 1.7% from the same month of the previous year. Gross sales of outbound package tours in April 2010 were 44.1 billion JPY, decreased by 10.2% from the year ago, while total number of tourists on package tours decreased by 18.3%.
