JTB Tourism Research & Consulting Co. has recently released its “Data Analysis on Japanese Inbound Tourism Trends (issued in July 2019)” – a report describing the latest trends pertaining to inbound travel to Japan. It presents a summary of the current status and future prospects for travel to Japan from six major markets (China, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, and the Western market), and how these affect eight regions in Japan (Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, Chubu, Kinki, Chugoku/Shikoku, Kyushu, and Okinawa).

Overview

  1. Trends in the number of tourists to Japan

    Changes in the number of tourists to Japan as well as their expenditure, and the relative growth rate for inbound tourism to Japan compared to neighboring countries in Asia, such as South Korea.

  2. Trends per major market

    Changes in the total number of outbound tourists versus those specifically to Japan, and their expenditure are compared for the Chinese, South Korean, Taiwanese, Hong Kong, Thai, and Western markets. So too are the growth rate for tourists to Japan as compared to competing countries, and future prospects bearing in mind changes in international airline seat capacity, etc.

  3. Trends per region

    Total bed-nights used by foreign visitors, the number of foreign visitors arriving via immigration points, and future prospects estimated based on changes in international airline seat capacity for each region, namely Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, Chubu, Kinki, Chugoku/Shikoku, Kyushu, and Okinawa, are presented. Prospects for each of the main supplier markets, namely China, Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong, and the Western market, are shown.
