  • JNTO estimated that the number of Japanese overseas travelers in August 2020 was about 37,000, which declined by 98.2% compared to the previous year. On August 26, the Government of Japan increased the number of countries designated as Level 3 travel alert(suspension of travel)by 13, bringing the number of countries/regions affected to more than 170.

  • From July 2020, the number of Japanese overseas travelers is gradually recovering as a result of the easing of restrictions on the entry of Japanese to Europe. However, restrictions on re-entry to Japan and international air travel continue to be imposed, and the number of departures to all countries/regions has declined by over 90% compared to the previous year.

Japanese Visits Abroad by Airport and Seaport 12 October 2020

  • The number of Japanese departures declined by nearly 99% in all airports in July 2020 compared to the previous year. The number of passengers departing from Narita Airport exceeded 10,000 for the first time after 4 months. However, the New Chitose Airport and Naha Airport continued to report zero international departure from April. About 90% of the scheduled international flights have been forced to be cancelled.
