JTB has compiled a forecast of travel trends for "people taking trips of one night or more during the year-end and New Year period (December 20 to January 5)."
This report provides estimates regarding travel by Japanese citizens for trips of one night or more, based on various economic trends, consumer behavior surveys, transportation and tourism-related data, and questionnaire surveys conducted by the JTB Group. The survey has been conducted continuously since 1969. (Our company is responsible for the research and analysis in this report.)

Key Findings
- Travel Trends Forecast for "People Planning a Trip of One Night or More During the Year-End and New Year Holidays (December 20–January 5)"The total number of domestic travelers during the year-end and New Year period was 39.87 million (up 2.5% from the previous year), and total travel spending was 1.9858 trillion yen (up 8.4% from the previous year)
For domestic travel, the number of travelers was 38.86 million (102.0% of the previous year), the average expenditure was 44,000 yen (102.3%), and travel spending totaled 1.7099 trillion yen (104.3% of the previous year).
For overseas travel, the number of travelers was 1 million (131.5% of the previous year), the average expenditure was 275,000 yen (108.7% of the previous year), and travel spending totaled 275.8 billion yen (142.9% of the previous year). - Domestic travelAlthough concerns about the future have had some impact, the number of travelers has increased slightly compared to last year.
While trips are shorter in duration, average spending (per person) has risen slightly due to economic conditions and rising prices.
Trips to nearby destinations accessible by private car with family, as well as travel within the same region as one’s place of residence (intra-regional travel), are popular.
There is a growing trend toward travel focused on enjoyment, such as "spending time with family," "relaxing," and "enjoying gourmet food, hot springs, and nature." - Travel AbroadThe number of travelers increased compared to the previous year, influenced by favorable calendar dates, among other factors.
The number of trips lasting 4 to 6 nights—considered medium-term trips—increased, while travel to nearby destinations such as South Korea declined slightly, and travel to distant destinations such as Hawaii, Europe, and the United States increased. Consequently, average expenses (per-person costs) also showed an upward trend.
