Cint Japan Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director: Carine Paroussi; hereinafter “Cint”), a global leader in digital insights software, and JTB Tourism Research & Consulting Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo;President and CEO Yoshito Kazama; hereinafter “JTB Tourism Research & Consulting”) have announced the results of their joint survey titled “Survey on Changes in Behavior and Awareness of Sustainable Tourism Among Inbound Travelers from Pre-trip to During-trip.”This survey focused on changes in information-gathering and behavioral patterns arising from the flow of time surrounding travelers, as well as their awareness of sustainability, in order to identify insights for attracting visitors.

Key Findings

  • Information-gathering and behavioral patterns of international visitors to Japan (from 13 countries)
Approximately 80% of visitors to Japan finalize their itineraries before departure, regardless of the length or type of their trip
Regarding what they want to do at their destination, Asian travelers tend to be drawn to topics trending in their home countries or among family and friends, while travelers from Europe and the U.S. tend to be drawn to topics trending overseas. To be selected as a travel destination, providing information tailored to travelers’ characteristics during the “pre-trip” phase is key
The top three travel patterns within Japan are “Staying in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area,” “Staying in the Kansai Region,” and “Tokyo Metropolitan Area → Kansai → Tokyo Metropolitan Area.”
Many travelers from Thailand and Taiwan tend to “stay in Hokkaido,” while those from South Korea tend to “stay in Kyushu,” and many travelers from India visit a relatively wide range of areas, such as Tohoku and Chubu.
When gathering information during the trip, travelers focus on “settling into daily life at their destination” in the early stages, “short-term experiences” in the middle, and “where to buy souvenirs” toward the end
  • Awareness of sustainability
The environmental protection practice I engage in most while traveling is “reducing food waste.” To further promote this, it is important to increase the variety of meal options available so that individual travelers can choose according to their needs
To support sustainable tourism, I plan to focus on using electric vehicles and avoiding modes of transportation with high environmental impact. I also choose accommodations and travel packages based on whether they are committed to the SDGs and environmental conservation.
