JTB Tourism Research & Consulting Co., Ltd. (Minato-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Hajime Nozawa) conducted the “Survey on Smartphone Use and Travel Expenditures (2018).”This survey has been conducted annually since 2013, making this the sixth edition. The company continuously conducts research and analysis on how consumers’ lifestyles and values influence their consumption behavior and travel habits.

Last year’s survey found that, driven by the popularity of Instagram, social media usage—which had been on a temporary decline—rebounded, leading to travel and spending motivated by the desire to create “Instagram-worthy” content. Recently, as electronic devices linked to smartphones, such as smart speakers, have become more widespread, practical applications are advancing, including services that allow users to consult with or ask questions of AI on websites and apps. How are these trends changing our lifestyles?

This survey aims to identify signs of future changes in daily life and travel behavior by continuously examining actual smartphone usage patterns and public attitudes.

Key Findings

  • For the first time, usage of "messaging and chat apps" has surpassed that of "email"
The use of search engines, video-sharing sites, and image-sharing sites is also on the rise
  • Bookings and purchases of travel products via smartphones continued to rise, reaching 47.3% (up 2.1 percentage points)
While "accommodations" and "restaurant reservations" are on the rise, "overseas tours" are declining
  • The appeal of AI-powered travel services lies in their "convenience" and "unexpected suggestions"
11.4% of respondents have used AI-powered travel services. Their impressions after using these services included:
“It’s easier to ask questions than with a human (60.7%)” and “It suggests places I wouldn’t have thought of myself (29.1%)”
  • 38.8% of smartphone game users have engaged in game-related social interactions or made in-game purchases
Men aged 39 and under show a high level of interest in esports. 14.6% have played esports, and 39.8% are interested in watching it.
  • Support is growing for services that “are frequently used in daily life” and “offer a complete solution in one place”
A common reason for using LINE and Amazon Prime is that they “can be used as a common means of communication among family and friends” and “allow users to handle a variety of tasks within a single service.”
