JTB Tourism Research & Consulting Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Yoshito Kazama; hereinafter “JTB Tourism Research & Consulting”) conducted the “Survey on Smartphone Use and Travel Expenditures (2023).”This survey has been conducted annually from 2013 to 2019, and this latest survey—the first in four years—marks the eighth iteration. The company continuously conducts research and analysis on how consumers’ lifestyles and values influence their consumption behavior and travel habits.
The 2019 survey revealed that the role of social media was shifting from a means of communication to a means of gathering information, and this trend has become even more evident in the 2023 survey.
In addition, regarding AI services such as ChatGPT, which have garnered significant attention, changes in how they are used for travel appear to be emerging due to technological advancements and their expanding reach.
This survey aims to capture signs of future changes in daily life and travel behavior by continuously examining actual smartphone usage patterns and public attitudes.

Key Findings
- Personal communication has shifted to messaging and chat apps, while social media is increasingly seen as a tool for gathering informationThe most commonly used smartphone features are "messaging and chat apps" (1st place) and "search engines" (2nd place). Usage of "email" (71.7%, 3rd place) and "phone calls" (64.5%, 4th place) has declined significantly compared to 2019.
People get the latest news from "trending topics" and "friends' reactions, such as reposts." - The most popular social media platforms are "LINE," "YouTube," and "Instagram." Usage rates for "Instagram" and "TikTok" have risen by more than 10 percentage points since the 2019 survey, and their user base has expanded across a wider age range.72.7% of men in their 30s and 63.3% of men aged 29 or younger
33% of men aged 29 or younger have experience watching or playing esports - 45.8% of people have changed their behavior because of smartphone gamesMy impression from using travel-related AI services is that, compared to the 2019 survey, the rankings for “being able to ask questions about things I don’t understand while traveling” and “not having any trouble even when traveling alone” have risen.
- Bookings and purchases of travel products via smartphones are on the rise for "tickets (transportation, events, etc.)," while "accommodations" continue to grow as well.
