Announcement of "Travel Trends for the 2025 Golden Week (April 25–May 7)"

JTB has compiled a forecast of travel trends for “people planning to take a trip of at least one night during Golden Week (April 25–May 7, 2025).”

This report is based on estimates derived from a questionnaire survey conducted by the JTB Group, as well as various economic trends, industry trends, transportation and tourism-related data, accommodation booking status, and various opinion surveys. The survey has been conducted continuously since 1969.Note that while the survey period was previously set from April 25 to May 5, it has been changed to April 25–May 7 starting this year to reflect current circumstances. (Our company is responsible for the research and analysis in this report.)

Key Findings

  • Travel Trends Forecast for "People Planning a Trip of One Night or More During Golden Week (April 25–May 7, 2025)"
    Total number of travelers during Golden Week was 23.45 million (93.1% of the previous year); total travel spending was 985.5 billion yen (96.1% of the previous year)
    For domestic travel, the number of travelers was 22.9 million (92.8% of the previous year), the average expenditure was 36,600 yen (101.4% of the previous year), and total travel spending was 838.1 billion yen (94.0% of the previous year)
    For overseas travel, the number of travelers was 550,000 (110.0% of the previous year), the average expenditure was 268,000 yen (99.6% of the previous year), and travel spending totaled 147.4 billion yen (109.6% of the previous year)
  • Domestic travel
    The number of travelers has declined slightly, partly due to rising prices, household financial constraints, and a tendency to shift travel dates to avoid crowds.
    Average travel expenses (per person) have increased slightly due to factors such as rising prices.
    Destinations are becoming more diverse, extending beyond travelers’ local areas. As travel to distant locations via rail and air increases, the average length of trips is also on the rise.
  • Travel Abroad
    The number of travelers has declined slightly, partly due to rising prices, household financial constraints, and a tendency to shift travel dates to avoid crowds.
    Average travel expenses (per person) have increased slightly due to factors such as rising prices.
    Destinations are becoming more dispersed outside travelers’ home regions, and the number of days spent traveling is also on the rise, in line with an increase in long-distance travel by train, airplane, and other means.
