JTB has compiled its outlook on travel trends for 2025.
This report provides estimates regarding travel by Japanese residents (including business trips and visits to hometowns) lasting one night or more, as well as inbound tourism, based on various economic indicators, consumer behavior surveys, transportation and tourism-related data, and questionnaire surveys conducted by the JTB Group. The survey has been conducted continuously since 1981. (Our company is responsible for the research and analysis in this report.)

Key Findings
- Travel Trends Forecast for 2025The total number of Japanese travelers in 2025 was 319.1 million (102.9% of the previous year)
For domestic travel, the number of travelers was 305 million (102.7% of the previous year), per capita travel expenditure was 47,800 yen (101.1% of the previous year), and total travel spending was 14.59 trillion yen (103.8% of the previous year)
For overseas travel, the number of travelers was 14.1 million (108.5% of the previous year), per-person travel expenses were 334,100 yen (106.2% of the previous year), and total travel spending was 4.71 trillion yen (115.2% of the previous year)
The number of foreign visitors to Japan was 40.2 million (up 8.9% year-on-year) - Domestic Travel by Japanese PeopleEmployment and wages are gradually improving, and living standards are expected to see a gradual improvement, providing a tailwind for travel.
Prices are expected to continue rising, and per-person travel expenses are projected to remain high. - Japanese Travel AbroadWhile the sharp depreciation of the yen in recent years has led to a trend of people holding back on overseas travel, a resurgence in overseas travel is expected once exchange rates stabilize.
The number of travelers is expected to grow not only to nearby destinations such as East Asia but also to medium- and long-haul destinations such as Europe and Oceania, and per-person travel expenses are projected to increase further from last year. - Inbound international tourists2025 is expected to surpass the record-high figures of 2024.
With the rapid post-pandemic recovery in demand expected to have run its course, the growth rate is projected to moderate compared to the previous year.
