Although the number of international visitors exceeded 10 million for the first time in five years, the recovery has been slow in East Asia
The number of outbound travelers in 2024 reached 13,007,000, recovering to the 10-million mark for the first time since 2019. However, this figure represents a 35.2% decrease compared to 2019, indicating that the recovery of demand for overseas travel is still taking time. When compared to outbound demand from East Asia (excluding China), South Korea has already recovered to 99% of pre-pandemic levels, and Taiwan has also reached 99%, indicating that Japanese outbound travelers lag significantly behind other East Asian countries in their recovery.

The number of female travelers in their 20s stands out, accounting for 30% of the population in that age group
The outbound travel rate for 2024, calculated as the ratio of international travelers to the total population, stood at 10.5%. Among this group, the outbound travel rate for women in their 20s (number of travelers ÷ population) was 29.4%, significantly higher than that of other age and gender groups.Although the number of outbound travelers is lower than in 2019, it is clear that women in their 20s are driving the Japanese overseas travel market. On the other hand, the stagnation in the number of outbound travelers among men in their 30s to 50s—who, like women in their 20s, had been driving the overseas travel market in 2019—is becoming apparent.

Younger consumers are less sensitive to exchange rate fluctuations, so they may drive the immediate recovery in demand.
The 2024 "Survey on Overseas Travel Preferences" includes a section on exchange rates and travel intentions to clarify the impact of exchange rates on overseas travel.Among both men and women in their 30s and older, many responded that they “would like to travel if the yen appreciates,” suggesting that those with prior overseas travel experience may be motivated to travel again if the perception of high costs due to exchange rates diminishes. On the other hand, among men under 30, a total of 45% responded that they “want to travel regardless of the exchange rate” or “would travel if there is a trip they want to take, even if the exchange rate is 150 yen or more per dollar.”Among women under 30, the most common response was “I don’t know what a fair exchange rate for overseas travel is, or I haven’t thought about it” at 44%, while “I want to go regardless of the exchange rate” and “I would go if there was a trip I wanted to take even if the rate is in the 150 yen per dollar range” totaled 30%.In light of these findings, it appears that younger people have little resistance to the current exchange rate, and it is likely that they will drive the immediate recovery in demand.
